Camps + Clinics

Longview Stables invites boys and girls, ages 6 and up, to participate in our Summer Horsemanship Camp Series.  Geared for beginners, each day includes a riding lesson, as well as equestrian-themed games and crafts.  While in the arena, each camper is paired with a Longview Junior Counselor, and is schooled in proper riding position, progressing to trotting solo by the end of the camp session.  Horsemanship outside the arena is equally as important, understanding the needs of these wonderfully generous animals.  Longview campers will learn about safety around horses, grooming and caring for their mounts, and enjoy a visit from our farrier and veterinarian.  Please join us for this fun introduction to horseback riding.

2017 Camp Dates

June 27 - 30

July 11 - 14

August 8 - 14

At Longview, we instruct our riders outside the arena as well as inside.  It is important to understand the needs of these wonderfully generous animals.  Our camps and clinics often take topics from the Horsemanship side of equestrian sport and focus on understanding what goes into the management of the horses’ health and well being.  Periodically, we send out tips and instructional write-ups to aid our riders and parents.  We see great reward from getting the riders closer to the horses -- the greater the communication and bond.

We offer horsemanship camps throughout the year – usually around school holidays to help out our parents.  In the Summer, we offer Beginning Horsemanship, Jr. Counselor, and Advanced camps.  Please contact us for more information and see the Camp Calendar for this year’s schedule.

Beginning Horsemanship, April thru August. Open to current clients and other young people, we encourage everyone to learn this side of the sport in addition to riding.  All first-time Junior Counselors participate as a pre-cursor to working a Summer camp session.

Topics include:

  • Tacking up + untacking
  • Tack cleaning and care
  • Proper leading and walking a horse
  • Grooming – brushing, hooves, etc.
  • Colors/markings and different breeds of horses
  • Basic riding principles like rein aids, position, etc.

Jr. Counselor Camp is an integral part of our beginning camps and we accept approximately 12 Jr. Counselors for each week of Summer camp. The counselors assist in prepping the barn, ponies and young riders for their riding lesson and horsemanship activity, assist during the riding lesson and help with clean up.  They then get a lesson of their own in the afternoon.  This is a wonderful opportunity for our riders to take on a small role of responsibility at the riding school.

Advanced Camp is for our young riders eager to learn a bit more around the barn.  Each rider will have a daily lesson coupled with horsemanship activities and games.  Additionally, we will have our farrier, Andy Burke and our vet, Dr. Heather Kerr talk to the campers about their work with our ponies/horses.   This is the perfect camp for all of our riders interested in spending more time at the barn and learning in a camp setting.
